Graphene Coating

Graphene vs. Ceramic Coatings: What’s the Difference?

For every vehicle owner, it’s a top priority to protect his investment. It has driven rising demand for top notch surface protection solutions, like ceramic and graphene coating. However there are several options available in the market which make it challenging the right one for your vehicle. In this article, we are going to compare both coatings types to help you select the option that best suits your vehicle needs. Ceramic coating for car has been tried for decades, but Graphene coating is a new technology. Hence, which one is better, and what is the difference between them. We will also discuss the steps to install Graphene coating for cars. Let’s get started!

What Are Ceramic Coatings?

Ceramic coatings is a semi permanent wax replacement technology that provides protection to the automotive surface from the environment factors and ultraviolet rays. These coatings are mainly made from Silicon variations: Silicon Dioxide (Sio2) or other forms of Silicates. Sio2 provides an advanced form of protection as compared to the normal polymer based sealants or carnauba waxes. It has more ability to resist the degradation and weathering of your car’s paint.

What Is a Graphene Coating?

A graphene coating can be considered as an evolution of ceramic coating technology. The latest graphene based technology is used to make a more durable and stronger voting which is also convenient to apply. Additionally, Graphene coating for cars is less reactive and these coatings are less vulnerable to the water spotting or etching when compared to ceramic coating.

Cost of Graphene Vs Ceramic Coatings

The price of Graphene and Ceramic coating for car depends on the brand and volume of the coating you bought. On an average you are expected to pay  $50-90 for 30ml of Ceramic coating. On the other hand the Graphene coating may cost you on average $70- $100 for 30ml for a mid sized vehicle.

Is It Worth Investing in Graphene Coatings?

Graphene is indeed a wonder material that has been assessed by the car care industry. Its physical properties allow the coating to outerform any other coating material in the market. It is extremely easy to apply and maintain with being extremely cost effective. Here are some of the additional benefits of Graphene coating for cars include:

  • High water contact angle (more beading)
  • Highly flexible (less prone to chipping or cracking)
  • Anti-static (car stays cleaner longer
  • Unsurpassed durability (5-10 years!)

As compared to other coating materials, the slickness factor of graphene is very high making it one of the best coatings in the market. If you’re someone that likes water beading effect then graphene coating is best for your vehicle. Some additional benefits of Graphene coating over Ceramic coating are:

  • Ease of application
  • Less prone to water spotting
  • Reduction in heat absorption on treated surfaces
  • Longer durability

How to Apply Graphene Coating?

Before getting Graphene coating installed to your vehicle, it’s crucial that you properly prep your vehicle surface. Here’s are the steps we recommend to prep your vehicle:

  • Thoroughly wash your vehicle with the two bucket method
  • A clay bar paint decontamination
  • A chemical decontamination
  • At least a single-stage paint correction
  • Clean the panel with paint prep
  • Wipe down your vehicle using a clean microfiber towel

Here are the general steps to apply Graphene coating effectively:

Step 1. Apply a few drops of Graphene solution onto your applicator until it covers evenly.

Step 2. Starting with the horizontal or top surfaces of your vehicle first, apply in straight lines gradually overlapping the solution from one line to the next. Start by working in very small areas nearly 3’x3′ or door size of half hood at a time. The coverage areas allowed will be determined by considering the temperature and humidity between application and removal.

Step 3. To make the coating layers even the applicators need to glide smoothly on your vehicle’s surface. In some cases the applicator begins to drag or the Graphene application is inconsistent. You can apply a few extra drops to the applicator to solve the issue.

Step 4. You will notice a Rainbow Effect (dark and more prevalent) soon after application while the coating starts to bond to the surface. After 1-3 minutes of application, the rainbow effect starts to turn into a fog or haze. It means that the coating is ready for the removal. The flash time of a rainbow may be influenced by the temperature and humidity. Always test Graphene coating at a small area of your vehicle first before applying onto the rest of the vehicle)

Step 5. You can thoroughly wipe down the section to remove the residuals of Graphene coating using a microfiber towel. You can use small, circular motions with little to no pressure during removal.

Step 6. Repeat the same steps as you apply Graphene coating to the rest of your vehicle. There should be a gap of minimum one hour between coats while layering.

Step 7. Let the coating thoroughly dry or cure for a minimum of 48 hours before you allow it to get wet. The longer it is allowed to dry the better the results. The coating will continue to cure for almost 5 days but you can drive the car with care during this time.

Is Graphene Vs Ceramic Coating Better?

Graphene coating indeed holds so many benefits over Ceramic coating for car whether its durability, longevity, electrical conductivity, thermal performance, and environmental impact. While ceramic coatings are a viable paint protection option, graphene is an advanced technology. The car enthusiasts who seek the ultimate glow and protection, graphene coatings are best because of its superior performance and extended longevity as compared to ceramic products.
